Hydraulic Fluid Additives and Temperatures

by | Nov 30, 2022 | Business

If a mechanical system is to remain stable, it requires fluid temperature stability. However, all lubricating and hydraulic fluids have limitations in operational temperature ranges. Hydraulic fluid additives are one method to maintain stability under extreme cold or hot operating temperatures.

Additives for Temperature Extremes

When the temperature becomes extreme, it has a pronounced impact on the hydraulic fluids (both synthetic and mineral-based). Since hydraulic oil is responsible for transferring energy, extreme temperatures affect the system. If the temperature sinks too low, the fluid viscosity becomes high. The opposite occurs when temperatures rise.

Hydraulic fluid additives help to combat this problem. Various additives provide temporary protection when the machinery is operated under extreme temperature conditions. They are blended to address the following conditions:

  1. Cold or Winter Weather: Large and small hydraulic machinery may work outside during wintry weather. Cold flow, including anti-freeze, are additives designed to enable use in wintry weather. This type is often called low-temperature hydraulic oil/fluid
  2. Hot Weather: Hydraulic oil does not thrive in extreme heat. It requires the addition of certain additives to reduce the risk of mechanical malfunction or damage.

Hydraulic Fluid Additives

Additives help to extend the life of machinery. They protect against rust, wear and other issues affecting machinery. Using additives can also address the change in viscosity created by extreme degrees of temperature. Whether the weather is hot or cold, blending additives into the hydraulic fluid will work to protect the mechanical systems as they operate in these sometimes extreme conditions.
